What to Track on Your GLP-1 Journey

What to Track on Your GLP-1 Journey

Stop focusing only on the number on the scale. Weight loss is the goal, yes. But the scale alone doesn't tell you what's actually happening inside your body. If you only watch your weight, you'll drive yourself crazy, and you'll miss the data points that matter most.

When I first started, I weighed myself every single day. One day down, next day up. I thought I was failing. I wasn't. My tracking was just too narrow.

Here's what you should actually be watching.

Your Body Is Doing More Than Losing Weight

The scale measures gravity. That's it. What you actually want to lose is fat, not muscle. And that's a different conversation.

I've seen clients drop weight fast and feel weaker because of it. When you lose muscle, your metabolism slows down and fat loss gets harder. From my own experience working with clients on GLP-1 therapy, tracking body composition, not just total weight, is what separates people who feel good from people who just look lighter on paper.

Visceral fat is the other thing worth paying attention to. That's the fat stored deep in your belly around your organs. It's not the soft, pinchable kind. It's the kind that causes real health problems. You can't see it in the mirror, which is exactly why you need to track it.

These aren't things the scale shows you. But they're the things that actually tell you if the weight coming off is making you healthier.

The One Tracking Tool Worth Knowing About

Continuous Glucose Monitors, called CGMs, are small sensors you wear on your skin. They track your blood sugar in real time. The FDA approved Signos, a CGM-based system, specifically for weight loss management, giving users real-time data and lifestyle guidance. ²

I use one to see how different foods affect my energy. You'll be surprised. A food you think is healthy might spike your blood sugar, while something else keeps you totally stable. That kind of feedback changes how you eat, without feeling deprived.

Organizing all of this data can feel overwhelming at first. That is why I always recommend reading Why Use a GLP-1 Tracking App to see how digital tools can simplify the process.

Mental Health Is a Metric Too

This part is uncomfortable, but it needs to be in here.

The FDA is actively reviewing reports of suicidal thoughts in patients taking GLP-1 receptor agonists, as of January 2026. ¹ That's not a reason to panic. It's a reason to pay attention.

Track your mood daily. Not in a complicated way. Just a quick note: how are you feeling? Are you more anxious than usual? Are you having waves of sadness? I tell my clients to keep it simple, one line a day is enough.

If you notice a real shift, like hopelessness or a change in your personality, contact your doctor right away. Tracking gives you the evidence to advocate for yourself. That matters.

The Emotional Shift Is Real

GLP-1 medications reduce what a lot of people call "food noise," that constant background hum of thinking about food, wanting food, using food to cope.

When it goes quiet, it's a relief for most people. But it can also feel strange. Food was a comfort mechanism for a lot of us. When that urge disappears, some people feel a little lost at first. I did.

That's normal. Track how you feel at social events. Are you anxious because you're not eating? Are you actually enjoying yourself more? This journey is as much psychological as it is physical, and the emotional data is just as worth logging.

Eating Less Doesn't Mean Eating Right

This is the biggest trap I see. The medication kills your appetite, so you skip meals. Then you wonder why you feel terrible.

You still need to eat. Every bite counts more now, not less.

Track your protein first. Protein protects your muscle and keeps you from feeling weak. Eggs, chicken, tofu, whatever works for you. Just hit the number.

Track your water too. These medications can dehydrate you. Dehydration shows up as hunger or fatigue, and it's easy to confuse the two when your appetite signals are already off.

And pay attention to micronutrients. Eating less volume means you can miss vitamins you'd normally get without thinking. A multivitamin is a simple fix, but you need to track your diet first to know what's actually missing.

A 500-calorie meal of processed food is not the same as a 500-calorie meal of lean protein and vegetables. Your body knows the difference, even when you don't feel hungry enough to care.
